Valentine’s Day Letter Coir Doormat

This was a simple doormat I made and it only cost me $12.00 out of pocket for the supplies.

Simple letter coir doormat

I’ve made many coir doormats and this one was by far the easiest because I did not use a Cricut, stencil or cutting board; I simply free-hand painted the design and by the way, I’m not a great artistic painter.

Just by using the free printable heart shape in the supply list below, you should be able to make one similar (or better) even if you feel like you are not a “painter or artist” as well.

I used the heart design print out to trace out a symmetrical heart, but this step isn’t 100% necessary either. You could freehand the heart design as well.

To make this doormat, you only need a few supplies (~$10.00-$18.00 depending on what you already have at home) and a half an hour of time.

Digital download Size 1 heart and Sizes 2, 3, and 4 hearts. I traced out size 3 for my doormat.

Exterior/Outdoor acrylic craft paint. The exact brand I used is called Craft Smart red, pink, and white. I mixed the pink with a little white to soften the color a bit.

chunky full bristle acrylic paint brush

thin bristle acrylic paint brush for tracing the heart

Tape measure

paper plate for paint

Krylon Clear Coating spray UV-resistant and moisture blocking

Coir outdoor mat. I used an 18×30 Traffic Master Mat. I read many reviews on these and found that for price and quality Home Depot seemed to carry the best mat (Traffic Master). I had a coupon so I got the mat for $9.00.

So far, being out in the rain, snow, and dealing with lots of dirty feet, my mat is holding up well. The edges shed very slightly though. So just be aware of that.

This photo is of the mat after 2 months of heavy use. It is holding up well and shows very little wear and tear. I think after I add a clear coat it will be good to use for many seasons to come.

How to Make This Valentine’s Day Letter Coir Doormat—Free Printable

Watch the video tutorial on this page or continue reading.

1. Mix pink and white outdoor acrylic paint to get your desired color of pink.

2. Using a chunky bristle brush, make 1 1/2 inch dashes all around three edges of the mat (bottom and 2 sides).

3. Print off heart printable. Cut out heart 3 (if you want to to the same size and heart as I used).

4. Using a tape measure find the center of the mat, then measure down about

5. Using red outdoor acrylic paint and a thin bristle paint brush, carefully trace the heart shape.

6. Fill in the heart shape with red paint.

7. Using pink paint, paint dashes from both top corners of the mat to the top of the heart. These dashes do not have to be perfect. In fact, a little variety in length, etc. makes it look more realistic.

8. Allow to dry (about 4 hours).

9. Optional- Place the mat outdoors away from anything you don’t want a bit of overspray on and spray with a UV-Resistant Clear acrylic coating. This will protect the mat from the sun and the elements a little.

I’ve coated other door mats with this clear coat but did not do it with this one. However, going forward I’ll likely do this step to all my outdoor mats because I have noticed a slight difference in durability. Allow to dry (a couple of hours).

That’s it! It is so easy and only took me about 10 minutes to make.

I was surprised at how much I loved making this door mat.

I really liked the way it turned out—I love the simplicity and cute factor. It goes well with my DIY Valentine’s Day Hoop wreath and Valentine’s Day Front Door Decor.

I also liked how inexpensive it was to make ~$12.00 out of pocket (as I had some supplies on hand) and that it only took me about 20 minutes to make.

I’d highly recommend making one!

I really like how it turned out

I hope you also get the chance to make this Valentine’s Day Letter Coir Doormat as well.
